At the 2025 Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2025), held from 22–25 October 2025 at the Durban International Convention Centre (DICC), South Africa, we sat down with Dr. Landry Dongmo Tsague, Director of the Africa CDC’s Center for Primary Health Care, for an insightful conversation on the future of PHC in Africa.
Dr Tsague discussed the challenges of aligning the Africa CDC’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan and the Lusaka Agenda with the diverse realities on the ground in Member States. He shared perspectives on leveraging Africa’s diaspora and globally trained health professionals to strengthen PHC sustainably, explored innovative financing mechanisms as external aid declines, and addressed how countries can build resilient PHC systems that maintain routine services while preparing for public health emergencies.
